After 4 days of trying to get Splash off the dock, Paola resorts to this wildly entertaining moment. What won't a dog trainer do to help her dog succeed?
Chaos' first HST of the year - I guess she hasn't forgotten. She looks back at me a few times on the first leg because I am doing such a poor job of handling, what with the video camera handicapping one hand.
Working on the indication. On the first find, I am standing still - easy for her to return and bark. On the next two, I am in motion, a bit of a mental challenge for her to recognize that she must still let me know she found something.
Breeze learns the sequence of behaviours desired to indicate the presence of human remains. Filming and 'taking' the indication at the same time is not the easiest thing I have ever done.

In competitive ... By: maliraptor. on 12 Aug 09, 16:08:49 In competitive obedience, the dog is judged by how close and straight he sits in front after a recall. This video shows the dog learning to target the center of the handler's body.
what is this ... By: YJakaPINKY. on 12 Aug 09, 14:48:11 what is this exactly ? i want a malinois so bad, but dont have a yard for one yet.
This is Breeze's second day skijoring, with her big sister Chaos. She had been along running free for about 5 trips, so thought nothing of being harnessed and hooked up in tandem.

Honestly, they ... By: maliraptor. on 18 Nov 09, 05:06:15 Honestly, they don't know the commands, I kind of shuffle myself to one side or other, lean into my edges, maybe gesture with a hand signal. Works fine for skijoring, wouldn't be anywhere good enough for a sled team lead dog.
can I ask how you ... By: kaotic137. on 17 Nov 09, 18:57:01 can I ask how you trained the gee and haw commands? I have started training my dog Trip who is a Chinook and I have got every other commands down and pat but the gee and haw. Im having difficulties with the commands
Look for a local ... By: maliraptor. on 03 Sep 09, 02:32:00 Look for a local sled dog equipment supplier. The harnesses are sled dog harnesses, the only other things you need (besides skis!) are a skijoring belt and shock-corded skijoring tug line.
Nice!!! I have to ... By: giodog2000. on 03 Sep 09, 00:43:40 Nice!!! I have to teach my husky how to do that.. What is a good rope and harness to do that . I supose you can't just tie any rope to the harness and where do I get it?

Idan, try starting ... By: maliraptor. on 26 Dec 08, 19:40:53 Idan, try starting with stationary eye contact. Have him sit and look at you, both from the Front position and the Heel position. Build it up to 10 seconds + before you try to take it outside.
Also, when you are outside, treats might not be compelling enough - maybe play tug and fetch, is he more focused for that? If yes, you could use the tug as a reward for training.
I really really ... By: idankashi111. on 24 Dec 08, 23:16:39 I really really hope you can try to answer on those questions, as you seem to be a very experienced dog trainer and I like the way you train Breeze.
Thanks you soooooooooooo much,
Idan

When we're ... By: idankashi111. on 24 Dec 08, 23:15:34 2)
When we're going out for a trip, and he sees another dog he's so excited. He doesn't listen to me, he pulls on the leash and even moans because he wants to play.
How can I make him less excited near dogs? I really want to go with him off leash in the near future, but as long has he gets out of control near dogs, it's impossible.
That is just making ... By: idankashi111. on 24 Dec 08, 23:14:50 That is just making it harder, I assume that when there will be an eye contact he will get to my pace and the heeling would be smoother...
I tried to train him to look at my eyes with the clicker - I held a treat near my face, moved it behind my head and when he looked at my eyes I clicked.
I tried it a lot and it doesn't seem to work...
Do you got any tip for me?
Well then, I got a ... By: idankashi111. on 24 Dec 08, 23:13:57 Well then, I got a couple of questions for ye, hope you can help me...
1)
When I give him the command 'heel', he gets to my left leg and sits.
We start to walk, and now the eye contact getting lost. I try to put the treat right near my face, but it still doesn't work. He walks with the face forward, a meter behind me, not even bothering to look at me and he kinda losing the heel...

My name is Idan, I'm 15 years old from Israel.
A month and a week ago I adopted a 5 months old mixed Malinois male(now he's 6 months) from a kinda dogs SOS that I volunteer at.
I usually train him like 3 times a day, using a clicker (click&treat :)
So far I taught him commands like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, Go to your mat, Down, Wave (hello). In my house, he's doin' very very well... Outside his attention for me getting lost.

Idan, her stay ... By: maliraptor. on 26 Dec 08, 19:37:05 Idan, her stay isn't strong enough to overpower her excitement to go tracking. This style of tracking is called Tracking Through Drive, and I don't want to take her out of hunt drive by comelling her to be obedient at this point in her training.
Why didn't you just ... By: idankashi111. on 25 Dec 08, 17:58:15 Why didn't you just command him to Stay when you put the harness?

Ahem. Keep doing this videos. I'm actually learning a LOT!
Breeze at 17 weeks, on a 150m track. We are obviously NOT tracking in the Schutzhund style! Rather, this is "Tracking Through Drive", favoured by the RCMP.
