In 2004 Emily and I went to meet with Zhao at the Bow Hair factory. After a tour there, we had a celebration dinner with friends and the Mayor of Anping.
Emily and I went food shopping at a Walmart in Shenyang, China. We have an apartment there and this is one of the places where we can get pretty good food. You can fill your shopping cart for about $12 with meat, seafood, vegetables, tofu and beer.
Emily and I spent a few days at the Daewon Musical Instrument factory in Dalian, China. That's the home of Gibson Guitars, Bean Blossom Mandolins, and Fender Electric violins, among other things. Here the worker is setting the binding on a Bean Blossom Mandolin.
Shenyang: China; December 20 2004. Emily and I were woken up by the sounds of scraping, laughing and singing coming from the street below. We had just experienced quite a blizzard the night before and woke up to observe a cultural phenomenon. There are no snowplows in China.
January 2005 Emily and I went to Daewon Musical Instruments in Dalian, China. We went there to tour the factory and meet with the manager about making a line of mandolins for TwoTree Strings.
Emily and I spent a few days at the factory that makes Bean Blossom mandolins, Epiphone guitars and so on. Here they are using a bulk sander to finish a mandolin back. You can see the racks of Bean Blossom mandolins waiting to be finished.
Emily took me to a zoo outside of Kaiyuen, China. It's in the Northeastern part of the country, about 300 miles north of Shenyang or 1200 north of Beijing. We went to this zoo. It was in the middle of the winter and cold as a witches' you know what. We went with Song and Qing and their Mom. Anyway this panda was agitated about something! Very cute though.
