When a solution of sodium tartrate is added to dilute hydrogen peroxide nothing seems to happen. When a small amount of cobalt chloride solution is added a vigorous reaction occurs. Analysis shows the gas contains a lot of CO2, indicating that besides H2O2 decomposition a lot of tartrate is oxidised . Probably the cobalt catalyses this by forming peroxo and superoxo complexes.
I tested my fume hood with the sash at working height. When I lower the sash, it instantly sucks all the fumes away, but working height is also very important.
Reaction: copper coin in 65% nitric acid.
When bromine water is added to 25% ammonia, a lot of white smoke is produced. Unlike iodine, wich reacts with ammonia to form highly explosive nitrogen triiodide, bromine reacts with ammonia, yielding ammonium bromide and nitrogen gas. The ammonium bromide escapes as white smoke.
a few mLs of dilute hydrochloric acid are added to 1mL of methanol.
To this a spatual of sodium nitrite is added, and the colorless gas methyl nitrite is formed. This is flammable as showed in the video.
Some concentrated hydrochloric acid is added to 25% ammonia. The gas ammonia wich is above the liquid reacts with the HCl to form ammonium chloride, wich is the escaping smoke.
